As we get older we often get more time to spend in our gardens tending the plants, weeding and planting out new bedding plants and shrubs but for some people bending or kneeling down to do these tasks becomes more difficult. A good solution to this problem is to install raised beds in your garden or on your patio.
A simple raised bed can be built using wooden pallets which can often be sourced for little if no cost. The pallets will need to be taken apart which can be hard work but then the pieces of wood can be arranged and screwed together to make a container. Lining the container with polythene will help to retain moisture and will also protect the wood from rotting.
If you do not fancy wooden raised beds then another idea is to build brick or stone ones. You may already have the materials for this around the garden in which case this is a cheap option because if you need to buy the bricks the cost can be high. It will be necessary to buy sand and cement for the mortar in either case. If you do not feel confident in your bricklaying skills you may be able to get a local builder to construct the raised bed for you.
