Improving a garden by Installing a pond

If you want to improve your garden, consider building a garden pond. It is not only an attractive addition but can also be an interesting hobby as it will involve time spent maintaining the water quality and caring for the fish.

The first thing to decide is the size and shape of your pond. If your garden is small, then obviously a small pond would be better whereas a larger garden could accommodate a larger pond with additional features such as a stream or waterfall. Many people choose a kidney shaped rather than a circular or rectangular pond as this looks more interesting.

When you have decided on the size and shape of your pond you will need to give some thought as to the type of pond you want. A wildlife pond which has soft edges with lots of planting allowing frogs and toads easy access may be your ideal pond or you may prefer a more formal feature with slabbed or stone edging.

To keep fish in your pond you will need to have an adequate filter system in place to keep the water in good condition. A pump and filter suitable for the capacity of the pond will need to be in place for a week or more before you introduce any fish in your pond to give time for the filter system to work and for the water to be chlorine free.
